Markleeville
Markleeville is named for Jacob Markley, who staked a 160-acre claim on a creek and erected a toll bridge on the road from Genoa, Nevada. The town hosts the annual bicycle ride called the Death Ride whose route goes over five passes for a total distance of 129 miles and over 15,000 feet of elevation gain. Markleeville is Alpine in appearance, with lush grassy valley areas. Grover Hot Springs is located just outside the town which has proven to be an immensely popular spot for many. Excellent hiking trails abound. Today, Alpine County is the least populated county in California but is a mecca for outdoor enthusiasts.
